NCL CEO urges Congress to end companies’ addiction to junk fees

National Consumers League (NCL) CEO Sally Greenberg today urged Congress to do more to rein in predatory junk fees that plague millions of consumers and honest businesses. In testimony before the Senate Commerce Committee’s Consumer Protection Subcommittee on the need for federal action to rein in predatory junk fees, Greenberg urged Senators to support multiple pieces of consumer protection legislation, including President Biden’s Junk Fee Prevention Act.  

NCL and 36 leading patient organizations urge Congress to protect access to essential laboratory tests

The National Consumers League (NCL) today sent a letter signed by 37 leading advocacy organizations, including groups that represent patients with common and chronic conditions who depend on laboratory testing to manage their health, urging Senate and House leaders to protect access to clinical laboratory services by enacting the Saving Access to Laboratory Services Act (SALSA / H.R. 2377 / S. 1000) this year.

Each year, I savor the MLK Jr. weekend and holiday because it gives me time to reflect on the impact that Dr. King had. And here in Washington, DC, there’s an annual march along the boulevard named for King that snakes through Ward 8, a largely African American community, with lots of inspiring speeches, marching bands, Double Dutch jump rope jumping, and health fairs along the route. I try never to miss it and today’s march did not disappoint!

Alcohol labeling: We’re in it to win it

But 2003 also marks an important milestone for American consumers. In December of that year, three national consumer organizations – the National Consumers League (NCL), Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), and the Consumer Federation of America (CFA) – first petitioned the federal government to require an easy to read, standardized “Alcohol Facts” label on all beer, wine and distilled spirits products. This sparked a 19-year battle that is finally paying off for the estimated 67 percent of Americans who drink alcoholic beverages.

NCL applauds federal agency’s decision to require mandatory labeling on all alcoholic beverages

Today the National Consumers League hailed the decision by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB), the federal agency that oversees alcohol labeling, to require mandatory labeling on all alcoholic beverages as a “great consumer victory.” NCL is grateful to the agency for this welcome – albeit long overdue – decision.
