Member spotlight: NeedyMeds
Meet Deborah Davidson
Director of Special Projects, NeedyMeds
How long have you been at NeedyMeds and what do you love most about your job?
I’m Deborah Davidson, the Director of Special Projects and have been leading the BeMedWise Program at NeedyMeds since June 2018. BeMedWise was formerly the National Council on Patient Information and Education (NCPIE), established in 1982 and one of the original patient safety coalitions. I served as the Director of Membership and Special Projects at NCPIE for 20 years. I love that BeMedWise found a new home with NeedyMeds, a national nonprofit established in 1997 that connects people to programs that will help them afford their healthcare costs. It gave me a chance to expand the BeMedWise mission and broaden both the user and support base. Whether I am working on issues related to the safe use of OTC’s, medication adherence, pain management, or prescription drug abuse awareness and prevention, I know BeMedWise with the help of the BeMedWise Council Supporters and Partners, continues to empower consumers to engage in medication management issues. I love that I play a role in helping people on their journey towards better health.
What are the biggest challenges and opportunities facing NeedyMeds today? (COVID & beyond)
The biggest challenge for NeedyMeds remains awareness of our organization and the scope of educational and healthcare resources we offer. Our partnership with the NCL and their Health Advisory Council goes a long way in helping us to connect with even more patients, caregivers, providers, and organizations with aligned missions. The recent pandemic challenged us as we wanted to quickly find a way to help Americans through this crisis. Yet, it actually also provided us with a unique opportunity to be a beacon of hope for a new population: those impacted by the pandemic. We created the COVID-19 Resource Center which lists programs that help with healthcare costs and financial hardships for those impacted by the COVID-19 Coronavirus. The COVID-19 Resource Center is expanding every day.
What NeedyMeds initiatives would you like to share with the Council?
In September, BeMedWise launched the first issue of the consumer e-newsletter “How to BeMedWise” just in time for this year’s Talk About Your Medicine Month. For the past 35 years, BeMedWise has hosted the Annual Talk About Your Medicines Month in October which spotlights important healthcare issues with a goal of better health outcomes through education and improved communication. 2020’s theme for Talk About Your Medicines Month is Medication Adherence. We’ve created a one-stop destination for everything you need to know about Medication Adherence on TalkAboutYour Medicines.org.
What does NeedyMeds value about membership in NCL’s Health Advisory Council?
Our long-time partnership with NCL and the Health Advisory Council is the result of our shared mission to help educate consumers and patients with vetted information on safe and appropriate medical education. This has never been more important than it is today, as Americans have had to reimagine every aspect of our lives during the global coronavirus pandemic. We value that we are able to join forces to empower consumers to make smart and safe choices. In fact, we look forward to NCL hosting the Fake Rx: Counterfeit Drugs in the Era of COVID-19 webinar for our audience. This webinar will not only educate NeedyMeds users, but showcases how our partnership can make a positive difference in people’s lives.
