The National Consumers League Applauds the Reintroduction of the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act; Urges Swift Action

June 5, 2025: Washington, DC – Months after the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) determined in a proposed rule that Medicare Part D should cover anti-obesity medications as a “medically necessary” service for people with the disease of obesity, the National Consumers League today applauded the reintroduction of the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act (TROA) in the 119th Congress as a critical step towards realizing this goal.  

World Food Safety Day 2025 is a call to action

But World Food Safety Day, an observance established by the World Health Organization (WHO) and celebrated around the world on June 7, largely goes unnoticed in the U.S. This is why the National Consumers League is flagging June 7 as a day when consumers should stop and think about the importance of preventing foodborne illnesses.

NCL Denounces Illegal Attempt to Fire CPSC Commissioners

May 9, 2025: Washington, DC – Washington, DC – The National Consumers League calls on the Trump administration to rescind the illegal attempt to fire Democratic Commissioners on the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). “This unprecedented assault on our nation’s regulator of household product safety is in direct contravention of the spirit and letter of the law, runs afoul of decades of Supreme Court precedent, and threatens to cripple the CPSC’s ability to carry out its lifesaving mission,” said Daniel Greene, the Senior Director of Consumer Protection & Product Safety at the National Consumers League.

National Survey Shows a Vast Majority of Americans Want Comprehensive Reform of the 340B Drug Pricing Program

May 8, 2025: Washington, DC – Today, the National Consumers League (NCL) released results from a new Morning Consult national poll of more than 10,000 American adults, revealing overwhelming concern about the burden of medical debt and strong public demand for comprehensive reforms of the 340B Drug Pricing Program. Nearly four in five surveyed adults (78%) support establishing requirements to ensure that qualifying patients directly benefit from 340B drug discounts through reduced out-of-pocket prescription drug costs. More than three in four surveyed adults (77%) believe hospitals should be required to pass 340B savings directly onto patients.

Over the years, I have deeply admired how Pope Francis radiated love and consistently echoed messages of humanity, kindness, mercy, and decency—qualities that have become all too rare among world leaders.

NCL mourns the passing of Rep. Raúl Grijalva

March 14, 2025: Washington, DC – Washington, DC – The National Consumers League (NCL) mourns the passing of Rep. Raúl Grijalva, who died on March 13 from complications of cancer. Grijalva, 77, a 12-term legislator in the U. S. House of Representatives, represented Arizona as a Democrat. He was born in Tucson in 1948.
