Q: Why did you decide to create PPC?
A: On the first day of my medical fellowship, my then 8-year-old daughter became critically ill. I could not believe how impossible it was to get safe quality care for her. I was scared to death and had no one to turn to. I decided to study health policy in an attempt to understand the health system from the outside looking in. My formal research showed physician-parents of children with different conditions had similar experiences and the group unanimously agreed on the need for a national organization to help all families, especially those without medical professionals.
Q: What is the mission of PPC?
A: Physician-Parent Caregivers PPC’s mission is to create social, systemic and policy change to ensure young adults with chronic conditions have quality health care and supports to learn, work and live meaningful lives.
Q: What are the top health policy goals PPC is working to achieve?
A: PPC’s health policy goals for young adults with chronic conditions include: data collection and health surveillance; young adult medical homes; inclusion in medicine, government, education, work and public health.
Q: How can NCL’s Health Advisory Council help you meet PPC’s mission?
A: The mission of NCL’s Health Advisory Council, that is: to convene a diverse membership to share perspectives and insights, identify common interests, and lay a foundation of support for NCL’s work in health-related consumer education and advocacy is exactly what PPC is looking for—a group of health policy experts who understand the complexities and commitment necessary to affect change. In the case of PPC, our young people can no longer remain invisible. It is my hope that NCL, together with colleagues in the Health Advisory Council, can help us amplify our work and together, we can improve policy and legislate the change this generation of young adults need to remain productive, healthy members of society.
