Q&A with Milena Berhane, NCL Health Policy Associate
We are thrilled to introduce to the Health Advisory Council our newest addition, Milena Berhane. She serves as NCL’s Health Policy Associate and we look forward to you all working with her. Please take a few moments to get to know Milena.
Can you tell members of the Health Advisory Council a little about yourself?
My name is Milena Berhane, and I am coming from George Washington University’s Masters in Public Health program in health policy. I also worked as a policy research assistant at GWU’s Sumner Redstone Center for Prevention and Wellness, where I focused on health equity policy in the DC area and across the country. Previous to my time at GWU, I completed my undergraduate education at Johns Hopkins University in public health studies. I am also a Maryland native!
What drew you to NCL?
I was drawn to the National Consumers League because of the amazing advocacy work it does, and the focus on consumer protection in health care. Health policy should be implemented with consumer interest in mind, and the outcomes that consumers will face as a result. The National Consumers League importantly focuses on health equity, health education, and collaboration with other health care organizations in order to protect and promote the health of all consumers.
What’s been the most exciting part of your tenure at NCL so far?
The Trumpeter Awards Dinner was a very exciting second day of work for me! It was an amazing event, and great to see so many different organizations come together to honor people that are doing important consumer protection work. It also gave me an opportunity to meet the majority of the staff at NCL, which I appreciated as well.
What’s a fun fact about you that you would like the Council to know?
I once traveled to six countries in the span of six months (pre-COVID of course)!
