Scam survivor day shines light on support for fraud victims

On May 2, anti-fraud leaders gathered in Washington, D.C., to prepare for the second annual Scam Survivor Day on May 8.

Hosted by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) with support from Capital One, the event featured panels with survivors, fraud prevention experts, and support advocates. The National Consumers League served on the event’s Advisory Council, joining partners like Amazon, PayPal, Walmart, and the AARP Fraud Watch Network.

U.S. Rep. Glenn Ivey (MD-04) issued a statement calling for stronger protections and support for victims. Speakers included Dr. Trina Clayeux, CEO of Give an Hour, which provides mental health resources to trauma survivors.

New initiatives were also announced, including the Advocate Academy from the National Center for Victims of Crime, BBB’s Restoring Trust program, and the Scam Justice Legal Clinic, which offers free legal aid to scam victims. The clinic is backed by Amazon, Pro Bono Institute, and other partners.

Also attending were NCL’s Lisa McDonald, V.P. of Communications, John Breyault, V.P. of Public Policy, Telecommunications, and Fraud, Eden Iscil, Senior Public Policy Manager, and NCL board member Debra Berlyn, President of Consumer Policy Solutions.  The BBB Institute also debuted updates to its Scam Survival Toolkit, designed to address the emotional and financial fallout from scams.
