Dissing Disinformation
Being a smart consumer requires having the facts and evidence from authoritative sources to make informed choices – whether the decision is to buy a car or choose the type of treatment for a medical condition.
But what happens when there is so much information coming at you at once that it is hard to decide what is true and who you should believe? This situation is called an “infodemic” and it is spreading misleading and false information about GLP-1 weight loss drugs at lightning speed, causing confusion and leading people to opt for drugs that are not FDA-approved or are actual fakes.
What is an Infodemic?
The World Health Organization defines an infodemic as…
A tsunami of information, some accurate but a lot misleading or completely false, that spreads at lightning speed and is intended to deceive.
Today, there are 4.9 billion social media users globally and studies find many people see and spread misinformation from social media, even when they know it isn’t true. This is why infodemics are so serious – they use social media to spread disinformation farther and faster than a virus, drowning out hard, clear facts and affecting decision-making.
What can you do? CISA (Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency), the federal agency responsible for cybersecurity, says the best way to fight disinformation is to understand how bad actors operate to manipulate what you believe. And with GLP-1 drugs, the place to start is by examining the content on websites promoting compounded versions.
According to new research reported in the JAMA Health Forum, several websites marketing compounded GLP-1 drugs omit information about side effects and possible complications and use misleading language and visuals suggesting the compounded product is FDA-approved or the same as an FDA approved drug. To see what this disinformation looks like, go to the two galleries below. You can get a sense of the claims that are circulating online and the words and photos designed to make you believe these claims.
The Weight Truth is that once you know what to look for, you can “dis” the disinformation and make choices based to truth and facts.
