Washington, DC \u2013 Yesterday, President Biden signed an executive order<\/a>\u00a0to establish\u00a0the most comprehensive standards to date regarding\u00a0artificial intelligence (AI).\u00a0The following statement is attributable to\u00a0National Consumers League\u00a0(NCL)\u00a0Chief Executive Officer Sally Greenberg:<\/p>\n \u201cNCL\u00a0applauds\u00a0the Biden Administration for centering consumers and workers in its\u00a0landmark executive order addressing AI.\u00a0It is critical that the development of artificial intelligence aligns with our democratic values, preserves civil rights, and protects consumers\u2019 health and safety as well as our privacy. Importantly, the Biden Administration has made clear that there is no exception for AI from the law\u00a0as it continues to model how\u00a0policymakers should tackle this issue. While the president\u2019s order is a\u00a0critical\u00a0step\u00a0forward, Congress must pass a robust bill to ensure\u00a0lasting and\u00a0comprehensive\u00a0federal law\u00a0governing AI.\u201d<\/p>\n As part of the\u00a0sweeping\u00a0executive order, federal agencies are to provide\u00a0clear guidance to landlords, federal benefits administrators,\u00a0and federal contractors to ensure that AI does not discriminate against\u00a0consumers and beneficiaries.
