Advocacy group: President Obama to announce welcome pay raise for federal contract workers

Tonight during President Obama’s fifth State of the Union address, he is expected to announce that his administration will issue an Executive Order to raise the minimum wage for employees of federal contractors to $10.10 an hour.

Watchdog report: scammers increasingly relying on Internet-enabled phone technology to reach victims

NCL has released its report of the top ten scams of 2013. The report revealed a sharp uptick in people contacted via telephone indicating con artists are using the Internet to reach high volumes of consumers.

Consumer groups push for mandatory alcohol labeling

This week the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC) will hear public comments regarding the 2015 Dietary Guidelines. NCL and other consumer advocates will use this opportunity to stress the importance of mandatory nutrition facts labels on alcoholic beverages.

National Consumers League statement on FTC crackdown on deceptive weight-loss advertising

The FTC has charged and fined four companies – Sensa Products, LLC, L’Occitane, Inc., HCG Diet Direct and LeanSpa, LLC – a total of $34 million for duping consumers into buying fraudulent weight-loss products.

Study: U.S. parents’ flu vaccine misconceptions concerning advocates

With flu season underway and the start of winter upon us, consumer advocates are concerned that misinformation about side effects and ineffectiveness of vaccines may be contributing to a failure to have children vaccinated. One in five Americans report having not received the flu vaccine due to fear that it causes flu; Fewer than half of parents say their child has received vaccine.
